Winemaker Katy Lovell of Poetic Cellars was one of only two women winemakers in the Santa Cruz Mountains: she was a pioneer and a trailblazer who could handle a forklift as easily as she could her sewing machine. She did everything from pruning the vines, to hauling the grapes to running the presses. Katy was also a single mother of 3 children, ages 18, 21 and 23. Until July 10, 2013, she waged a brave battle against pancreatic cancer, following a two-year struggle with Lyme disease.
Poetic Cellars was the fulfillment of her dream to make wines as contemplative and beautiful as her weavings and quilts. After completing her degree in music studies at Oberlin College, Katy pursued a career as a concert flutist, then, after an injury to her hand, turned to pottery and weaving, becoming an accomplished fabric artist before turning to full-time winemaking in the mid 1990’s. She studied winemaking at Davis, after which she founded Rios-Lovell winery in Livermore with her former partner, Max Rios, the father of her children. A woman of uncommon grace, grit, and generosity, nothing got her down, except pancreatic cancer. It’s probably the only thing that could have killed her incredible spirit. Yet, she braved it all with her trademark glowing smile and her charming wit. She was truly one of a kind. A series of benefits are being held on her family’s behalf over the next few weeks.
